Devotional: Fighting Battles by Leaning on God

“The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.” — Exodus 14:14

Life brings battles from many directions. Sometimes the battle is in the family, where love and frustration seem to live in the same room. Sometimes it is at work, where pressure, expectations, and conflict weigh heavily. Sometimes the battle is loneliness, when the house is quiet, the phone is silent, and the heart feels forgotten.

But Scripture reminds us that God does not abandon His children in the middle of the fight. He is not distant, unaware, or unconcerned. He is present.

The song “Surrounded (Fight My Battles)” by UPPERROOM points to this truth: the way we fight is not always by striving harder, arguing louder, or carrying everything ourselves. Sometimes we fight by worshiping, praying, surrendering, and remembering that Jesus has already gone before us.

When family relationships feel strained, we lean on Jesus for patience, forgiveness, and wisdom.
When work feels overwhelming, we lean on God for strength, integrity, and peace.
When loneliness settles in, we lean on the promise that Christ is near to the brokenhearted and will never leave us.

David wrote, “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies” (Psalm 23:5). Notice that God does not always remove the enemies first. Sometimes He feeds us, strengthens us, and reminds us who we belong to while the battle is still happening.

That is faith: trusting God before the situation changes.

Jesus never promised a life without trouble. He said, “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Our hope is not that life will be easy. Our hope is that Jesus has overcome, and because we belong to Him, no battle gets the final word.

Reflection

The battle may look like family tension, work stress, or loneliness, but underneath it all is the same invitation: lean on God instead of carrying it alone.

We do not fight from fear.
We fight from faith.
We do not fight alone.
We fight surrounded by the presence, promises, and power of God.

Prayer

Lord,
I bring You the battles I cannot fix on my own. I bring You my family struggles, my work pressures, and the loneliness that sometimes weighs on my heart. Teach me to lean on You instead of leaning on my own strength. Help me trust Jesus in the middle of the fight, not only after the victory comes. Surround me with Your presence, steady my heart, and remind me that You are fighting for me.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Today’s reminder:

The battle may be real, but so is God’s presence. You are not fighting alone.
